I have a student in this situation and I have given it a lot of thought. For this semester, her two arias are:
Son Pochi Fiori from "L'Amico Fritz" "Porgi Amor" from Le Nozze di Figaro
Both show a bit of the dramatic, but are not going to "raise eyebrows" like Wagner or some Puccini.
Many art songs show dramatic qualities as well. Look at Duparc, for example, as well as Schubert's "Gretchen am Spinnrade" and "Die Junge Nonne."
The solution for bigger young voices is not, IMO, to force them into lighter, higher repertoire.
