Dear Dave,
In Europe, Cabaret is a mixed bag comprised of comedy routines and original music/songs, and which usually includes political humor, spoofs on current events, news, TV commercials, and anything else in the culture that might be worthy of parody or comic presentation. Original songs are usually interspersed between dialogue pieces.
In this country, Cabaret is usually everything our fellow posters have mentioned, and more. Cabaret.org has been mentioned by someone in a recent post, and that is a good place to begin.
Some opera directors have infused Cabaret material into the second act of DIE FLEDERMAUS, during the party scene. It actually works quite well.
