lloyd,
i think you'll find that people who listen mostly to pop music would not want to hear anything operatic in the singing of pop music. the 'personality' usually comes across as mrs. doubtfire-ish. however, there are a number of pop singers who have had extensive classical vocal training who have not totally erased the characteristics of that training (pat benetar had classical training but her singing does not betray that in any way either, because she got rid of it or, never had it in the first place. and nina hagen just sucks, in my humble opinion).
kristian johannsen's son, who sang in a metal band called candlemass, exhibited his operatic training quite strongly. yet i think a style that is more extreme, as metal is, and not conversational in nature, is more likely to tolerate the relative oddness of an operatic timbre.
