I personally don't use affirmations as a pre-performance energizer or
confidence booster. Instead, they are more like a daily ritual, something in
which you give yourself positive messages. Lord knows we all give ourselves
enough negative ones!

I haven't found it to be the least bit counterproductive--quite the
contrary!--although like anything else, I suppose that it could be
counterproductive if taken to extremes (eg and affirmation like "I'm the
greatest singer in the world and nobody can teach me a thing about
technique"--would be harmful!)
