dear lloyd,

thank you for your post. i have a few questions.

in richard miller's book 'training tenor voices', he compares bjoerling,
domingo, corelli and pavarotti. bjoerling and domingo make little sound
above the 'singer's formant' yet corelli and pavarotti do. is this what
makes me think that the later two have more 'squillo' than the former two?
also, what about spectral analysis would make me think that the former two
sound more baritonal and the latter two sound more tenorial? is it that
which appears above the 'singer's formant' or is it something in the vowel
range?

the only spectral analysis i've ever seen of a non opera singer is an
analysis of billie holliday singing 'strange fruit'. as i remember (16yrs.
ago), the 'stacks' varied widely. looking back, i would have to say that a
comparison of holliday's voice to that of an opera singer, with a well
produced voice, would be that the opera singer produces a reading of a
constant intensity where the primary variation would come in the vowel range.
i assume that a vowel would be consistant in its reading whenever it was
repeated. have you seen many non-classical singers in spectral analysis?
do their readings tend to resemble the patterns of speech? are there any
non classical singers who meet your criteria for a 'well produced' voice that
don't sound like opera singers (by my criteria, that is)?
