Dear Vocalisters:

Tatiana in "Eugene Onegin" is a lyric soprano role. She is a young girl for
her famous letter scene, one of the longest solo arias in opera. Even her
later, more mature scenes occur only a few years later in the time line of
the opera.

The fact that the music is so variable yet melody filled makes it attractive
to a wide variety of voices but it was originally written for a young
voice. Tschaikovsky wrote the opera for students at a music conservatory
and must have had some concern for the maturity limits of the students who
would be doing the roles. Most of the arias work well with college age
singers if they can get around the Russian language difficulties.
