I can't speak for anyone else, but my judgement of Dawn Upshaw's crooning
comes not from operatic criteria, but from that of the pop world--spread
vowels, shallow tone, straight tone, glib presentation, et. al. I don't
want to hear Sondheim in Schubert, though I like both.
