Beauty is over-rated. She can sing with a beautiful tone. Listen to her
Handelian ballads, like "Gentle Morphius". I think she changes her tone to
suit each role. I think she is more interested in playing a character in a
"real" way than prettily. Aren't soubrettes *supposed* to concentrate more
on the personality in their voice rather than beauty of tone?

I always think of Mozart's operettas and comedic operas as precursors to
musical theatre rather than to Verdian or Wagnerian opera...
