hmm, i suppose if grunting doesn't push it up (the larynx, that is), no
air pressure would (which has been my assumption). i imagine baxter means
that lifting the larynx is part of swallowing and that engaging those
muscles, while singing, will raise it then. there are other muscle actions
during swallowing that don't come into play.
it is funny that baxter says tyler thinks high notes are over his head
(sounds like something a cat would think). i think it is more the feel of
singing that tyler gets that sends his larynx up. he sings as if he is
purging (not to be confused with puking) the way a baby cries. i use a baby
cry (waa) exercise when i practice and with my students to show how easy it
is to sing really high and really loud when you don't give a @#$% what it
sounds like. the result is a sound commonly found in 'metal' singers. i
think some of them get damaged from all the extra efforts they throw in with
it (not to mention the stuff a lot of them are sticking up their noses).
