Subject:  slices heads off with a single vowel

Dear Vocalistoids,

All theses posts about amplified vs non-amplified singing keeps
reminding me of my own antics/misadventures with the dreaded microphone in
church. Those of you with performance experience should find my naivete'
amusing.

I transferred to the Cathedral (RC) not long ago and only
previously had done solos sans electrification. Our choir normally sings
from a loft above the narthex behind the parishioners. I was asked to sing
Schubert's Ave Maria for the Feast of the Assumption (Assumption Day) Mass.
At the last minute, and somewhat without much warning or chance to prepare,
I was told to "step up to the mike"; and "real close, too, cuz' its very
directional". Well, you get the picture: I sing the first line....
("Wow!--what the heck is this?", I thought.) So I tried to "rein (sp?) it
in" and in the process felt my voice go dead. ("The heck with that! ") So,
I just sang the way I normally sing, squillo/bite/edge and all. The color
came back; the vowels improved; but I'm sure I cut some peoples' heads off
:-(. My teacher had a good laugh, at least; told me I don't need, and
shouldn't use a microphone. Live and learn...

Regards to all!
