i can't agree that all styles are a deviation from good technique.
this notion assumes that there is an established 'good technique' from which
to deviate. i believe that technique should be considered a method by which
you accomplish a purpose. the value of a method should be judged on its
effectiveness in obtaining the result.

the criteria by which that effectiveness would be judged will vary from
singer to singer and from listener to listener.

within one style, there is always a debate as to which approach is best.
to have the ability to sing in a variety of styles requires either a
technique that generally fits everything or, what appears to being capable of
switching techniques as one switches styles. it is my impression that sls
fits the description of the former while jo estill's approach fits the
description of the latter.

to any of the slsers, i would be curious to know how you go about
varying from style to style (or do you?) with perhaps a detailed example.

thanks,
mike
