Well, a lot of Wagner's writings have been quite anti-Semitic (and I can't be specific right now because I packed my notes after grad school and don't know in which box to look!) and based on that as well as the Hitler connection, many people dislike Wagner.
I just don't enjoy his music, overall. My SO loves it, and I must say I like parts of it ... I think Dutchman is great, but then again it's early.
I don't care much for Verdi either - particularly his operas with a political theme.
