Hello All,

Although I know it's hard to determine a singer's
fach at the college-age level, but I would have to say
that at my school, lyric sopranos are by far the most
common female voices, with maybe only 6 voices I would
confidently call (developing) coloraturas amongst
approximately 100 voice majors, about 65 female.
There are also only about 5 female voices that seem to
be genuinely bigger, possibly developing into spinto
or dramatic voices( mezzos included). With the male
voices the baritones do dominate, and once again, I
can only think of maybe two voice that are probably
developing into more Verdi-esque voices. We have about
15 tenors, only one which I think may develop into a
spinto voice. I believe we only have 3 low basses, and
absolutely no genuine contraltos.
Isabelle, perhaps the reason you've come across
so many coloraturas at competitions is because these
voices tend to develop more quickly than the larger
voices, giving them a slight head start. Just my
2 cents.
