i have heard colin davis and seiji ozawa humming over a loud boston symphony. i'm sure jerry lewis, ethyl merman, ross perot and a lot of others could be heard over an orchestra as well. (ross perot recording of 'a lincoln portrait')
i feel that pavarotti, though having a smaller voice, gets through an orchestra more easily than domingo. a possible explaination could be that (according to the samples in richard miller's book 'training tenor voices') pavarotti produces more 'noise' above the range of 3300hz. than domingo who produces nearly none. miller says that too much 'noise' above this range accounts for shrillness. there are plenty of people who are shrill and they make it look so easy. (squillo- italian p.c. for shrill.)
