I would add that it helps to figure out WHY you're sustaining the note.
What's the motivation (emotional/musical purpose) for sustaining the note?
(Aside from "that's what the music says.") Then, I incorporate the
motivation into my interpretation of the sustained note. Increase intensity?
Crescendo? Decrescendo? Little vibrato to increasing vibrato? (IMO, to be
beautiful, listenable, the note needs to do something aside from just
hanging there in midair.) This has the side benefit of taking my mind off
beat counting and worrying about whether I'll 'make it.'
