As to very famous singers, one is the Wagnerian tenor Ben Heppner who sang
chorus with the
opera company in Canada (Canadian Opera Company?).

I've read of others, though the names escape me. There have been posts on this
topic to
the Opera list, and perhaps some creative searching in the Opera-L archives
would turn
them up for you ("opera chorus" plus "singer", perhaps?)
