This was the first recording of the Strauss that I heard. Nothing since has
approached it. Her voice here is so *instrumental*, so smooth and nuanced,
with a long spun-out line such as I hear in the very best violinists, and
which one notices when la Bartoli sings "Sposa son disprezatta". john
