I believe the great question here is not singing in a choir with other professionals but singing in amateurish choirs with less than professional level singing. When one is singing with people who aren't really solo singers we end up by bringing down our own standards. For instance, it is almost impossible for a person with a big voice like mine not to stand out in an amateur choir. Last Christmas I was asked to help rehearse a 300 voice choir for a Xmas concert by a very close friend of mine. In the concerts I was asked to sing with them.. and my voice "pointed out" of the choir, as well as the voice of my soprano friend in the same situation.
