Lynda and others,

Agreed.  But what about those who are stuck in a situation that insists on straight-tone singing?  Are there ways to please the director without harming the voice?

I have a friend who says he has come up with a way to avoid the problems straight-toned singing can cause.  He says that, number one, he never sings above MF or so.  Secondly, he never lets his external intercostals activate while singing.  In other words, he only uses abdominal muscles when singing straight-tone, and not the ribs.  Does this makes sense to you, and have you heard anything like this before?
Thanks for your expertise and thoughts...
