I think I remember Richard Miller differentiating between "open chest" and "chest mix" in Structure of Singing. Is there a way to "flip" between the two? The reason I ask is that I know a contralto who mentioned a difficult transition at about A3 as well. I can't help wondering if this lowest register is analagous to a man's speaking voice...
