It is my understanding that the direction of the Italian accent (the
diacritical mark, not the dialect!) has no bearing on the pronunciation of
the accented vowel. When I was (fleetingly) an undergraduate Italian major
I learned that the convention was to use only one type of accent mark --
the grave accent -- and that its function was only to denote syllabic
stress, not vowel identity.
