Anne, here. I believe that many students of acting become confused about
Stanislavsi's Method when they read his book-An Actor Prepares. The
actors that the character of the teacher is working with are already
skilled in acting technique. Stanislavski was suggesting ways to get out
of the way of the technique (skills, if you will) of acting. He was
teaching how to breathe life into the character--I think at the time he
came around acting was very broad and artificial, therefore
"naturalness" was new.
