Owain Phyfe and the New World Renaissance Band specialize in this type of music, and there are many songs on their various CDs that would be very appropriate. One of my favorites is the traditional Sephardic piece, "La Prima Vez" which can be found on their "Odessey" album. It's terribly romantic with an incredibly beautiful, singable melody: The first time I saw you I fell in love with your eyes. From that moment I loved you, and I shall love you to the grave. Come closer, my dearest, savior of my life. Reveal your self and tell me your life's secrets. Of course it sings better in Sephardic: La prima vez que te vidi de tus ojo me enamori. De aquel momento te ami, Fina la tomba te amare. Acercate me quierida, salvadora de me vida. Descubrite y hablame secretos de la tu vida. Good luck! This sounds like a lot of fun. Hugs, PJ. Hi listers!
I've been asked to sing for a Renaissance style wedding. I have picked out a number of songs, but the more I look at them the more I feel they are inappropriate to sing while the bride, dressed in her Renaissance wedding garb, walks down the aisle to her husband-to-be. So many songs of the era are double entendres or just too sad, or whatever.
I finally broke down and ordered "30 Songs" vol. 1 by Henry Purcell. It is advertised as having history and performance notes. I am looking forward to its arrival on Tuesday, but the wedding is on FRIDAY! I'm TOAST! Does anyone have this book, and have some recommendations?
The time off of worrying about the music will give me time to finish my dress. I'll be a moss green Renaissance monolith, but honored to be singing for her. (Her first choice for a wedding was just herself and fiance, best man, minister and me.) I believe her fiance is a self-described "Ren Faire Freak." The more I have learned about him, the more I wanted the song to be perfect. This is going to be SO much fun all decked out in costume! I haven't been to the Renaissance faire in a hundred years, and now I'll have a costume! I'm just glad the accompanist is incredible and that I can learn quickly. So much for advance preparation!
Thanks in advance,
Jocelyn Thulin-Gooch Lyric Soprano Alameda, California
