Hi Sandra,

Very sensible advice from Trevor. Don't adjust your
singing, let the microphone be adjusted to you.

Any kind of feed back means that your equipment is ill
advised to cope with your voice; for instance a cheap
player/recorder. A sophisticated sound desk can cope
with the various harmonics etc that the human voice
can carry.

Also, when adjusting the sound levels yourself, it's
just possible you're trying to record a 'bigger' sound
than is needed. It's a common fault in students who
think if I bump up the record level, they'll be more
oomph. Yes, more oomph, but at the cost of good sound;
result? The dreaded feedback.

Hope this is of some use, but as Trevor so rightly
says, just enjoy your singing and never mind
microphones. They are a blessing and a curse!
Remember, Dame Clara Butt could be heard over a mile
away in the open air, and there weren't microphones
then!!

Best wishes,

Ian Voice technician, Bromley, Kent, England.
