Hi all-
I don't normally sing with a microphone but sometimes have trouble when I do. The problem-basically, my voice combined with the mic. results with a high pitch squealing type-sound. It almost sounds like some kind of microphone feedback. The squeal sound does not correspond with volume. I can be singing very soft or forte and it occurs.
I record my lessons and it has never showed up in my lesson tapes, which I suppose could be due to my singing differently (perhaps by having an instructor to correct me) or because of a different recording setup. This high squeal pitch does show up when I record myself at home during practice. My instructor and I have the same type of mic. but I have a cheap radio shack portable recorder whereas his recording system is more sophisticated-could that be it? My instructor does occasionally turn the mic. down during lessons because, per his words, I'm "blowing out the mic." But he has never indicated this to be a bad thing-I think perhaps his comment is more relevant to too much volume for a small studio room. And it doesn't sound hooty or bad on the lesson tapes.
We had a new mic system installed recently in a church where I sing with the choir and no matter where I sat-close or far away-the mic. picked me up and projected me above everyone else with a high-pitched hooty sound. Does this sound like a technique problem on my behalf or a mic. problem? I'd greatly appreciate any thoughts on the matter.
Thanks much!
Sandra
