Hi all:)
I was hoping to pick the collective brains of the list with regards to writing coloratura embellishments. A conductor mentioned to me that he was sick of every coloratura he encounters trotting out Richard Bonynge's/Dame Joan Sutherland's ornamentation and cadenzas. While I do adore Dame Joan, looking at it from the listener's perspective, a heap of sopranos trotting out the same embellishment's from 'Torna mi vagheggiar` would get very boring in an audition situation. More importantly, La Stupenda's embellishments were written for *her* voice, not necessarily suited to every soprano.
I'm aware of the Estelle Liebling books of cadenzas but as they appear to be widely condemned for overdecoration, I would rather not fall into that trap.
Can anyone reccomend some references for me to research on this subject?
I would not want to do anything that was not consistent with the style or the time. ie Handel is not Rossini, Rossini is not Donzetti or Bellini etc
I have searched on the Net using google, altavista etc and aside from producing pages with innumerable reviews and the occasional interview with Sir Charles Mackerras, there wasnt' really any relevant information.
If anyone can offer any advice or direction, it would be most appreciated.
Thanks again
Kylie
