I'm always amused by the acting of those women in pants. Why do they think
they need to act so (boyishly?) virile? It is just like businesswomen who
think it necessary to be even colder and more "professional" then men, in
order to succeed and/or to protect themselves.

In fact, if I had to play the role of a young hyperactive boy, I would take
those girls in pants as models. Boys are boys without acting like boys. Only
girls act so much as boys.

However, the pants roles are a convention. As soon as the audience see a
girl in pants, it probably assumes that the character is a boy. It might not
be necessary to overact as a boy... though it is always funny to watch!
Recently, we had "Albert Herring" staged at the Paris Conservatoire, and the
children were played in an incredibly "realistic" (well, maybe even
expressionist!?) way by three female students.
