For the most part, you're probably right. Basso-cantante (basically a bass-baritone with good coloratura) was what he most likely had in mind.
I have to say, though, the John's Passion seems to be written for a true bass for the role of Jesus (requires a rock solid low F). Also, from a choral standpoint, he seems to expect some pretty serious low notes (B1 -> D2)...
