It think sopranos tend to blend down as in this way they can just
about avoid chest voice altogether as most of the soprano repertoire
does not go below middle C.
In Jerome Hines book Great Singers on Great Singing, there are
sopranos who use chest and those who don't, or at most just for the
very occasional excursion. I don't think Mezzos on the other hand
would be able to manage the repertoire if they didn't learn to blend
registers.
Are there mezzos and contraltos who only use head voice I wonder ?
