Simon may be nasty, but he's probably the most realistic in his advice to people. And in fact, people he liked on last year's AI (which in this case definitely doesn't NOT stand for Artifical Intelligence) got voted off by the home audience, which went for the superficial and the flashy. I didn't actually watch the show - I'd see clips on the Today Show the next morning from the comfort of my bed w/coffee in hand. That's as close as I get to reality television - that and Trading Spaces.

In my opinion, the big scandal of American Idol is that each contestant was screened before Paula, Randy, and Simon heard them. The audience is given the impression that they heard EVERYBODY and had to suffer through all of these horrible auditions. The truth is, good people were turned away and bad people let through just so they could be humiliated on television.
That being said, Simon is my hero. I am just dying to tell a prospective student, "A word of advice for your next audition: don't." But I would get fired.
