Day?!

I must say that Diane is a model of dignified conduct on a discussion
list. And I wish us all a happy valentine's day - especially in
these tense times, it's good to remind ourselves that on this list we
may have our differences, but we share a common celebration of the
human voice used in song.

I do think the topic has diverged a bit, and frankly I think Randy
has a point (or several). Reality is that:

a) children are not taught music and singing in the public schools to
the degree that they once were,

b) the arts are in trouble today,

c) if a talented young person wants to consider a career in singing -
not just as a serious hobbyist, but expecting to pay the bills by
singing - I think Randy's oft-repeated advice that professional
prospects in strictly classical musical performance are limited is
worth considering.

And yes, I know I'm not a professional singer so perhaps my opinion
doesn't count on this list.

For what it's worth,

Michael Gordon
