If you build it, they will come... what was "it" again?
I dunno why Tosi and Garcia called singing one-pitch sustained pp ff pp "placing the voice". Maybe Italian meanings have shifted since 1723; English has after all. In particular, I can't tell whether they were referring to physical positioning of the larynx and other bits that make the sound, or if they were referring to singers' sensations of what's happening when they're singing "well". Like most technical singing terms, this one was widely used long before anyone had an inside view of the vocal tract in action and before singers could hear themselves as others heard them. The technical language of singing is an attempt to teach people to make sounds they couldn't hear using mechanisms that no one could see. No wonder there's room for confusion.
After all, people talk about "building a voice" too. Does that mean you have to have development approval before you learn to talk?
