Perhaps someone can can a more definitive answer, but I have a
Swedish co-worker who gave your sentence a brief look - from what I
understood:
"han hade legat" = he had been lying down
"och skrivit det i" = and writing it
"en stor sal" = in a big hall
Otherwise, something like "He was lying down (had been lying down?)
in a big hall when he wrote it". My co-worker thought it was a
strange sentence...
