I recently had the opportunity to hear another soprano (who shall remain nameless) who has been noted for her work in the baroque repertoire. I have some of her recordings and they are delightful.
I was expecting an inspiring evening (and our seats were in the 8th row, directly in front of her) but in fact heard very little sound from her. She has become ****ed near inaudible, and is exhibiting some of the facial contortions that Kathleen Battle has been critized for. Very sad.
Although she's no longer a youngster, this woman should not be in such poor vocal condition. I can only speculate that it is the price of poor technique (supporting with the throat rather than the body). Apparently it's possible to get away with it for a while, but it catches up to you eventually!
