Dear Karen and Vocalisters:

It should also be remembered that the mezzo soprano category is
rather new in the field of opera singing. It was much more common in
the 18th century to speak of sopranos and contraltos. The mezzo
catagory is much more the product of the late 19th century as is the
term Baritone. Some even claim there never was a baritone
classification until the works of Verdi.
