As for Terfel, he has done theatre. Actually, he was set to star as Sweeney opposite Patty Lupone in the recent Lincoln Center Concerts of Sweeney Todd. Unfortunately, he experienced physical problems which led to the 11th hour replacement of George Hearn.
***** He seems to be doing well now--but he's just getting over a back surgery. Did anyone else go see his recital in Berkeley last weekend? Even for someone who didn't just have surgery it would take stamina to sing a 2 hour recital (with intermission). The first half was Wolf, Schumann, and Brahms--the Four Serious Songs. My two other faves were the Rat-catcher, and the Grenadiers. Then, the second half was British and Welsh rep--Butterworth, Ireland, Michael Head, etc. What was interesting is that he let the music speak through him--and didn't try to over-act the songs. That said--I enjoyed watching his interpretations. And, of course, he just totally let loose on the encores--which was a lot of fun!
