Dear List:
The question has been raised whether "Is having a teacher a pre- requisite for posting to this list, or asking a question?"
Of course not. On the other hand, certain questions are difficult to answer via email. It is not uncommon for the following kinds of questions to come up:
1) What kind of voice am I? Do I sound like a blah blah? 2) How do I extend my range? 3) How can I find my head voice?
These kinds of questions are really not that amenable to answering based only on email.
Further, when someone asks rudely, and sounds immature, and seems to be so confused that email advice is likely to of little value, and flat out rejects the most useful advice at the start, then the person asking for help is not going to get the best of responses.
The following, in my opinion, constitutes rude behavior:
1) An ALL CAPS SUBJECT - indicates yelling.
2) Not introducing yourself.
3) Using an alias rather than one's name - this is not some anonymous chat forum here - many posters are personal or cyberspace friends and there is a sense of community.
4) Proclaiming yourself to be "very busy" - this implies that your time is somehow more important than the time of the people you want to help you.
5) Asking for advice but saying "and don't tell me to ..."
6) Not attempting to do even a little bit of basic homework first. For example, suppose someone joins the list and then immediately asks a demanding for help question without having spent a little time to see what has been discussed on the list.
It does not take much technical savvy to do the following:
a)Go to the website - groups.yahoo.com/group/vocalist-temporary. There is a "Search Archive" button below "Recent Messages" - people should learn how to use it. If everyone who say wanted to ask about "head voice" would see the archive first, they would find all sorts of good stuff.
b) Go to google (http://www.google.com) and search for whatever the question is - you might find the answer.
c) Go to amazon.com and search for books or recordings.
Cheers,
Michael
