I don't know if I'm qualified to answer this, seeing as I'm a female female, and not even a teacher. I can tell you the one constant I know about singing: If it hurts, you're NOT doing it right!
However, I've found that during "pollen season" properly made high notes will make my ears vibrate.
Do you need help finding a teacher? If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area (California, USA), I might have a couple of suggestions.
