Dear Dire,

Please don't despair! I suspect the reason for so few responses to your
plea is that the wisdom of the list is that, if you are serious about
singing, you must somehow find the time for voice lessons! A teacher won't
regail you with the secrets of singing so much as *listen* to what you are
doing and *watch* how you are doing it, then guide you towards your goal.
He/she will then teach *you* how to listen and watch as well. You'll end up
with a tape recorder to listen to yourself, and a big mirror to monitor your
own posture, breath movements, facial tensions, etc. You can't get these
from a book or on-line. For example, you say your range is from C2 to F4.
That's fine. but range alone tells one very little. C2 to F4 could be basso
to undeveloped baritone with good low extension. Without hearing you, the
list can't tell where your voice is centered. I have heard some very
amateur basses sing to E or F4, but by pushing their chest voice very high.
Miller calls this the "call voice" or simply a "yell". It's not very
pleasant. As for head voice, you may not even have one yet, or it may be so
undeveled as to be undiscernible to all but the most trained ears. Let a
teacher help you. I say this to you as a student whose voice has grown
tremendously under some very experienced and encouraging ears.
