Check with the website of MTNA (music teacher's national association)-sorry, I don't have it handy, but google will get you there! Then you can find out if there might be a local chapter near you. Our local chapter provides a referrals service which can be helpful in getting a new teacher started. You will then have the opportunity to meet other teachers in the area and gain information about pricing, repertoire, and many other important things. Belonging to NATS (national association of teachers of singing) might also be useful.
I have also sent information packets to local church choir directors, public school directors, etc. and have put posters up at the University, the arts center and the YMCA. I have attended concerts at high schools and community chorus productions, and used the list of choral members for a mass mailing (get a mailing list from a member, use a school directory or the good old phone book for addresses). That having all been said, most of my students now come from referrals from current and past students.
Hope this helps! Sharon Szymanski The Szymanski Studio (we now have four teachers teaching over 75 students!)
I would like to start teaching classical voice and beginnger piano. Where do I find student? Posters? Word of mouth? Any ideas would be great! Thanks!
