i view most pop singing as being speech based. i know there are
many who say that singing and speaking are different motor functions but, i
feel it is too fine a distinction. also, i think that thought is primarily
in observation of classical singing.

the thoughts you have about singing are way too anal for pop singing.
i think you would be best off 'just singing' and fixing the train wrecks.
the way most people sing something like 'happy birthday' (to someone they
don't like that much, especially) or, the way they sing stupid songs during
long, boring trips in the car with their grandparents, is the closest thing
they will get to 'just singing'. fixing the train wrecks, most of the time,
boils down to getting rid of the actions based on misconceptions of how sound
works. thinking 'high' and 'low' notes is a matter of height rather than
frequency or, 'trying to get the sound out', are two of the most common
misconceptions that set people off doing incredibly dumb things.
