The problem with a University host is that we could be
kicked off at any time. Say if the school gets in a
financial crunch and looks for ways to cut costs. Or the
faculty member who got us there leaves the institution and
there goes the personal connection. Or somebody at the
university doesn't like our content (an issue with the Opera
list, hosted by CUNY, which forces the listowner and his
helpers to spend a lot of time moderating content - not that
I mind the results of moderation because some of those guys
are nuts, but it's a lot of work). For example, on more
than one occasion the listowner of the opera list has had to
fight hard to continue being hosted by the university. And
he is or was a doctoral candidate there and employed
locally, by the NY City Public Library's Performing Arts
library, so can easily maintain his personal connections
with decisionmakers at the university. And the opera list is
well-known and respected throughout the professional opera
world (many opera singers who don't read it themselves, have
their friends send them copies of postings about them). But
if we go with some university where maybe only one person
has a connection, when things get tough, who's going to pay
attention to us, halfway across the country and nobody at
the school knows who we are?

Now that John C has so kindly gotten vocalist.org back for
us, I would like to see the Yahoo vocalist archives copied
on a regular basis, if possible, to the vocalist.org
web-site, so we don't risk losing them if yahoo decides to
change, discontinue or charge for the service.
