BJLA:
What you describe is the simulation of the chorus "effect: as provide in most electronic musical instruments. As a simulation this is only slightly related to the true sonic complexity of a living human chorus and the electronic method of achieving this effect is, at best, a gross over simplification of the the interaction of voices in a choral setting. The synthesis of a violin tone, even when taken from a quality sampler, approximates the true violin tone only within about a 20 to 30 % level of accuracy. Even less accuracy is true of the so called "chorus effect" that is available through the technique you describe. -- Lloyd W. Hanson
