Dr. Clark, Please read my statement carefully. I am in no way speaking here for the experiences of other people. Rather, I am merely presenting herein an opinion JUST LIKE YOU ARE. I am surprised that in a forum of supposedly FREE expression you should appear irked by an opinion that opposes yours. NOW...... you are FEELING first before thinking ...of what artistic techniques to utilize in your expression. I believe this question of whether one should depend MORE on "external techniques to generate internal feelings" later OR to sing from the heart is a matter of CULTURAL DIFFERENCES. I come from a very musical country where almost anyone can sing and where many amateurs can sound like professionals. Perhaps, because of our political and economic history, it is not difficult for us Filipinos to SING FROM THE HEART that one doesn't have to consciously depend more than necessary on "external techniques". This is the reason perhaps, why many fine classical singers here are able to instinctively do so consistently , replete with the necessary vocal technique and artistry and yet are not able to articulate on what they do. To clarify my point further, I am NOT dismissing the VITAL role that artistry and acting techniques play in performance. We agree on this except that, IN MY OPINION, in the reverse order of what you believe. And to the MANY that you say who find your technique useful, may they explore the possibility of being able to internally process a variety of emotions, e.g., - deep sympathy for the underprivileged and the oppressed, the most painful heartbreak, the bitterest anger or jealousy, great love for others ,the most blissful, most sublime feelings such as awe and reverence for the Creator, etc. - and to empathize with the conditions of the less fortunate peoples of the world - so that when they sing , they sing FROM THE INSIDE OUT, RATHER THAN FROM THE OUTSIDE IN. Then and only then will they truly be able to SING FROM THE HEART. In the meantime, I hope we agree that our presence here is for the purpose of 1. presenting a variety of ideas, options for our intelligent readers to ponder on 2. to learn from others and in so doing, hopefully, know more about ourselves, specially in the area of being self-less and able to truly love and respect others. I must take issue with this statement. You are certainly qualified to speak about your own experience, but you are not qualified to speak unequivocally about everyone else's. Using the external techniques to generate the internal internal feelings most certainly does work for a great many people. If you don't care to explore the benefits of this tool, you need not use it. But don't assume that no one can find it useful, because many do.
