Today's singers need to be able to sing in a variety of styles and venues to
maximize their potential. The Today's Singer Workshop focuses on the
techniques, stylistic elements and industry knowledge necessary for today's
marketplace.

Topics Include:

Vocal Technique - Vocal technique for today's music places different demands
on the singer than what most teachers teach. How do singers like Stevie
Wonder, Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, Bernadette Peters and Michael Jackson
make the sounds they do? Speech Level Singing, a technique used by over 100
Grammy winners and numerous leads of Broadway leads. Speech Level Singing
efficiently teaches a singer how to bridge the vocal registers using the
all-important mix.

Vocal Style- Much of today's music and modern musical theater derives from
African-American traditions. The ability to vocally improvise, riff, and
create alternate melodies is a hallmark of this style and in invaluable in
giving the singer the style necessary to effectively deliver today's music.

Acting the Song- What makes a singer exciting? A good voice is not enough.
A thrilling singer is also a thrilling performer who can make you believe
every word through his/her delivery of the text and use of his/her body.
Learn what it takes to bring a song to life and create charisma as a singer.

People You Should Know- A lot of professionals are involved in developing a
singer's career. Here is your chance to meet and ask question of Chicago's
top professionals, including entertainment lawyers, producers, managers,
casting agents, performers and health professionals.

Janet Louer
Co-founder of the Chicago Casting Center and manager of Tony Award-winning
actress Heather Headley, star of Elton John's musical "Aida." Janet is also

Randy Buescher
Chicago's top voice teacher. Randy has worked with singers from the
following labels: Columbia, Sony, MCA, Maverick, Atlantic, Universal,
Interscope, and others. He has also worked with leads from the touring
companies of Broadway shows such as Beauty and the Beast, Showboat, Rent, Les
Miserables, and Phanton. His students also are regularly cast as leads in
local musical theater productions and have been seen or heard worldwide by
millions of people. In addition he is degreed in Speech Language Pathology
and has had original research published in the NATS JOS. He is a frequent
lecturer who has given workshops or been a panelist for NATS, NARAS, numerous

Mark Burnell
Mark is one of Chicago's leading musical theater coaches and a well-known
cabaret performer and accompanist, at such places Davenports, Hotel Allegro,
Pops for Champagne, and the House of Blues. He spent nearly two decades as a
faculty member of Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, and Roosevelt Universities.
He released a critically acclaimed CD last year with Anne Pringle, and the
single from it, 'Heaven Down Here,' is currently being played on nationally
syndicated radio stations.

Dr. Robert Bastian
Considered one of the leading experts in the field of professional vocal
health. An assistant professor of otolaryngology at Loyola Medical Center,
and head of the Loyola Voice Clinic, he pioneered surgical techniques for
professional voice users. He is highly sought after for his expertise in the
areas of diagnosing and correcting vocal disorders.

Ken Truhlar
Well-known Chicago producer Ken Truhlar has worked with Patti Austin, Phil
Collins, Taylor Dayne, Danny Boy, and Vanessa Williams.
