There is another theory that abdominal avoirdupois pulls the viscera down
and out and that retards the upward movement of the diaphragm, which also
slows the inward movement of the ribs, assuming, of course that the singer
is upright

my notion of support is that the intention is to keep excess air
pressure away from the throat. according to the practice of appogio (did i
spell that right?), this is done by using the action of inhalation to resist
the muscles of exhalation. if fat is pressing into the diaphragm, support
becomes more difficult, not easier.
