I agree with you. Particularly with students, if you worked on something for a couple of months, it is well to then leave it alone for awhile, and when they come back to it several months later they will notice the difference. OTOH, I've known it to work the other way. Many years ago there was a concert on TV in Europe from the Vienna Opera. On the first part Nicolai Gedda sang "Amor ti vieta" from "Fedora" and it was awful. He sounded old and worn out, with no brilliance in the voice, nothing. I thought, oh dear, why doesn't he stop, and not ruin his reputation? After the break he came back again and sang the Lenski aria from "Eugen Onegin", which he had always sung divinely, and still did. He sounded 25 years younger than in the other aria. Somehow his muscles still knew how it went.
