Subject:  "Muscle Memory"

Hello Vocalisters...

In reading the Countess thread, I noticed
mention of muscle memory. Apparently, some folks
believe when a singer learns a piece of music, the
vocal technique used becomes deeply imprinted on the
piece. Thus, should the singer come back to the piece
years later, s/he will use the older, less
mature/efficient technique. This has simply not been
my experience. I will admit that rhthymic mistakes
may be harder to shake, but I'm always able to
approach an old piece of music with my new technique.
Good technique is the result of building good habits,
which are, essentially the fruit of 'muscle memory',
but I don't believe an entire piece of music becomes a
habit itself. Does this make sense to anyone else?
