Subject:  Belting for the opera singer: where to start?

I ask this 'cause I am starting graduate school for my
MM in voice, and I would feel kind of silly asking
"hey, I wanna belt...how do I do that?", when no doubt
I should be concentrating on arias. I am just amazed
at how Eileen Farell can wail on jazz like no one's
business, yet so far my lame attempts sound as bad as
Jessye Norman's or Kiri Te Kanawa's. AGGH! Just
wondering if you kind posters can help me figure out a
few things. Anyone here learn how to sing pop
successfully (meaning, NOT like an opera diva or
divo?)? How long did it take you? Did you do it mostly
on your own,or with help?

A million thanks,

Molly
