One other "exercise" that may help with tension release:
Lay on your back on the floor, with knees slightly raised (place a pillow under them), arms down at your side, facing the ceiling. Close your eyes, and breath quietly, evently, and deeply. Just lie there, feeling the sense of gravity and heaviness. As you do this, you might notice a twitch in a muscle - e.g., in your shoulder, or your hand, or your lower back. Don't do anything to stop this twitch. Let it happen - think of it as coil unwinding. Just lay there, and as twitches happen, LET THEM. You may find them getting even more dramatic - your butt may want to lift off the floor. Let it. Your had may want to "thrash" a little from side to side. Let it. Just allow all those over-tight muscle "coils" release themselves. Your only "effort" should be to make sure you keep breathing evenly and deeply, no matter what the rest of your muscles want to do.
Continue laying there, allowing your body to just do what it "wants" to do, until all the twitches stop. Lay there a while longer, totally serene, breathing evenly, and feeling - interestingly - lighter, more flexible internally, almost "floaty". When you feel you're finally totally calm and peaceful, sit up very slowly and carefully. Stretch a little.
Give yourself an hour to do this the first time. If you want music during that hour, it helps to use music that is serene and totally unintrusive - e.g., Gregorian chant.
